An EORI number (also written EORI no or EORI nr) identifies your business to customs. EORI numbers do not expire. They stay valid until you ask to cancel them or your business stops trading.<\/p>\n<h2>Who Needs an EORI Number?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UK:<\/strong> you need a GB EORI to move goods between Great Britain and any other country, including China.<\/li>\n<li><strong>EU:<\/strong> businesses established in the EU need an EU EORI for customs. Businesses outside the EU also need one if they lodge customs declarations in the EU.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Northern Ireland:<\/strong> you usually need an XI EORI to bring goods into Northern Ireland from Great Britain or from outside the EU.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You do not need one if your goods are not controlled and are for personal use only. For business imports, plan on getting an EORI number before your first shipment leaves China.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Apply for a GB EORI Number<\/h2>\n<p>You apply for a GB EORI number online on GOV.UK. Applying is free.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Get your details ready.<\/strong> You need your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), your business start date and SIC code (both on the Companies House register), and your VAT number and VAT registration date if you are VAT registered. Sole traders also need their National Insurance number.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sign in and apply.<\/strong> Use the &#8220;Get an EORI number&#8221; service on GOV.UK. You can create sign-in details during the application if you do not have them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get your number.<\/strong> Most applicants get their EORI number straight away. If HMRC needs to check the application, it can take up to 5 working days.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Not based in the UK?<\/strong> Overseas businesses do not need a UTR, SIC code or National Insurance number to register for a GB EORI number.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Get an EU EORI Number<\/h2>\n<p>There is no single EU application. You register with the customs authority of one EU country:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If your business is in the EU,<\/strong> apply in the country where it is established. In Germany, for example, the EORI number is issued free of charge by German customs (Zoll).<\/li>\n<li><strong>If your business is outside the EU,<\/strong> register in the EU country where you will make your first customs declaration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once issued, one EU EORI number works at customs in every EU country. You do not need a new one for each country you import into. To get one:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apply for a GB EORI number first. You cannot get an XI number without one.<\/li>\n<li>Have any XI VAT or EU VAT numbers ready. Businesses based in Northern Ireland may also need 2 documents that prove their business address there.<\/li>\n<li>Expect your XI EORI within 5 days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your business already has an EU EORI number, you usually do not need an XI number.<\/p>\n<h2>EORI Number vs VAT Number<\/h2>\n<p>An EORI number is not the same as a VAT number, and one does not replace the other:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>EORI number:<\/strong> identifies your business to customs on import and export declarations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>VAT number:<\/strong> identifies your business for VAT returns and invoices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you import, you usually need both. The EORI number goes on the customs declaration. The VAT number lets you account for import VAT. In the UK, VAT-registered importers can use postponed VAT accounting instead of paying import VAT at the border. It confirms whether a number is valid. If the business agreed to share its details, it also shows the registered name and address. It only checks numbers that start with GB.<\/li>\n<li><strong>XI and EU numbers:<\/strong> use the European Commission&#8217;s EORI validation service.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Your own number:<\/strong> look at the confirmation you got when you registered, or ask your accountant or customs broker. Your number also appears on past import declarations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Do You Need an EORI When Shipping from China?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, for any commercial import into the UK or the EU. The number goes on the import declaration whatever the transport: sea, air, rail or express. A GB EORI is not valid for EU imports, and an EU EORI is not valid for imports into Great Britain. A business that imports into both needs both.<\/p>\n<h2>What Happens If You Ship Without an EORI?<\/h2>\n<p>Customs cannot accept an import declaration without the importer&#8217;s EORI. Copy and paste the number, and check it online.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Applying too late:<\/strong> apply as soon as you plan to import, not when the ship has already arrived.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Old details:<\/strong> if your company name or address changes, update your EORI record too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>EORI Checklist Before Your First Shipment<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Decide who will be the importer: your company, or a partner under DDP.<\/li>\n<li>Apply for the right EORI: GB, XI or EU.<\/li>\n<li>Check the number on the official checker.<\/li>\n<li>Send it to your forwarder and customs broker.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the commercial invoice shows your company name exactly as registered.
