With weekends and make-up working days, they become longer breaks.
• Chinese New Year (around 5–13 February 2027) has by far the biggest impact. Factories close for weeks, not days.
• Golden Week (1–7 October 2027) closes most factories for a week, and the weeks before it are a peak for shipping.
• Ports keep working through the holidays, but trucking, factories, customs brokers and warehouses slow down or stop.
• The official 2027 schedule is usually published by China’s State Council in November. How many days off are joined together, and which weekend days become make-up working days, is set each year in the State Council’s official notice. Check the final schedule before you plan production around it.

Chinese New Year 2027: The Biggest Shutdown

Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027. The official break is about a week, but the real impact on supply chains is much longer:

Before the holiday: many factory workers travel home one to two weeks early, so production slows from mid to late January. Everyone rushes to ship before the break, so freight rates rise and space on ships becomes tight.

During the holiday: factories, trucking companies and most warehouses close. Ports keep running with fewer staff.

After the holiday: it usually takes two to four weeks for factories to get back to full capacity, as some workers return late or change jobs. Shipping lines often cancel sailings after the holiday because demand drops.

For a full plan, see our guide to Chinese New Year 2027 shipping.

Golden Week: 1–7 October 2027

National Day starts a seven-day holiday known as Golden Week. Its effect on shipping is smaller than Chinese New Year, but still important:

Most factories close for the whole week, and some stop a day or two earlier.

September is already peak season for Christmas stock, and the rush to ship before Golden Week makes space even tighter. Expect higher rates and earlier cut-offs.

Ports and shipping lines keep working, but trucking, customs declarations and warehouse handling are limited, so cargo that misses the pre-holiday cut-off often waits until after 7 October.

The Mid-Autumn Festival on 15 September 2027 comes two weeks before Golden Week, so September has two breaks close together.

The Shorter Holidays

New Year’s Day, Qingming, Dragon Boat and Mid-Autumn: one to three days off. Production pauses briefly, and shipments rarely miss more than one sailing.

Labour Day (1–5 May): a five-day break that delays production and inland transport by about a week.

Make-up working days: to create longer breaks, China often moves working days to a Saturday or Sunday. Factories may be working on a weekend and closed on a weekday, so always check the calendar with your supplier.

When to Order and Book: A Planning Timeline

Holiday

Place orders by

Book freight by

Goods ready at the warehouse by

Chinese New Year 2027

Late November to early December 2026

Early January 2027

Mid-January 2027

Labour Day 2027

Late March

Mid-April

Late April

Golden Week 2027

Late July to early August

Early September

Mid-September

These are general guides. Lead times depend on your product and supplier, so ask your factory how long production takes and add at least two weeks of buffer before each major holiday.

Checklist Before a Chinese Holiday

Ask each supplier for their exact closing and reopening dates.

Confirm production finishes at least two weeks before the holiday.

Book freight early, especially for full containers before Chinese New Year and Golden Week.

Get your commercial invoice and packing list ready before the factory closes.

Plan for higher freight rates before the holiday, and for blank sailings after it.

Arrange quality inspection before the shutdown, not after, so problems can still be fixed.
