LCL (less than container load) shipping lets you send a few cartons or pallets by sea without paying for a whole container. Your goods share a container with other shippers’ cargo, and you pay only for the space you use. This guide explains how LCL shipping from China works step by step, what you pay for, how long it takes, when a full container becomes cheaper, and how to avoid the problems that catch first-time importers.

Key points
• LCL suits sea shipments from about 1 to 15 cubic metres (CBM). Below that, air or express may be faster for similar money; above it, compare a 20ft container.
• You pay by volume or weight, whichever is greater, plus charges at origin and destination.
• LCL takes about one to two weeks longer than a full container, because the goods are consolidated in China and separated again at destination.
• Good packing, clear shipping marks and accurate packing lists prevent most LCL problems.

What Is LCL Shipping?

A standard 20ft container holds about 28 CBM and a 40ft about 58–68 CBM. Many importers, especially those buying samples, first orders or goods from several small suppliers, have far less than that. In LCL shipping, a forwarder or consolidator collects cargo from many shippers, loads it into one container, ships it, and separates it again at the destination. Each shipper pays for its share.

LCL is also called consolidated shipping or groupage. The opposite is FCL (full container load), where one shipper uses the whole container. For a direct comparison, see LCL vs FCL.

How LCL Shipping Works, Step by Step

Here is a typical LCL shipment from a supplier near Shenzhen to a warehouse in Los Angeles:

Step What happens Typical time
1. Booking You send carton sizes and weight; the forwarder quotes and books space on a weekly LCL service 1–2 days
2. Pickup or delivery to the warehouse Supplier delivers to the consolidation warehouse (CFS), or the forwarder collects 1–3 days
3. Receiving and check Cartons counted, measured and checked against the packing list Same day
4. Export customs Chinese export declaration filed 1–2 days
5. Consolidation and loading Your cargo is loaded with other shippers’ cargo; the container goes to the port before the cut-off Waiting for the weekly sailing: 0–7 days
6. Ocean transit Port to port About 14–20 days to the US West Coast
7. Deconsolidation The container is moved to a destination CFS warehouse and unpacked 3–7 days
8. Import customs Entry filed and duties paid by the customs broker 1–3 days
9. Final delivery Truck from the CFS to your address, or you collect 1–5 days

In total, LCL door to door from South China to the US West Coast usually takes about 30–40 days, depending on sailing dates and customs. Steps 5 and 7 are what make LCL slower than a full container.

What LCL Shipping Costs

LCL freight is charged per W/M (weight or measurement): the carrier compares your volume in CBM with your weight in tonnes and charges whichever is greater. For most consumer goods, volume is the larger number. For heavy goods such as metal parts or stone, weight may be. If you are unsure how to measure, see chargeable weight.

A full LCL quote usually has three parts:

Part Common charges Who usually pays
Origin (China) Pickup or trucking, warehouse receiving, export customs, documents, origin terminal charges Seller or buyer, depending on the Incoterm
Ocean freight Freight per CBM, plus fuel and other surcharges Buyer under FOB, seller under CIF
Destination CFS and devanning charges, handling, customs entry, duties and taxes, delivery Buyer, unless shipped DDP

Typical LCL ocean freight from South China at November 2026 rates:

Destination LCL per CBM
USA West Coast $120–150
Canada (Vancouver) $140–190
Vereinigtes Königreich $60–90
Germany and North Europe Quoted per shipment

Small shipments are usually subject to a minimum charge, and destination charges can make up a large part of the total on a small LCL shipment. Always ask for a door-to-door or all-in quote so you can compare like with like. For an estimate from your carton sizes, try our freight cost calculator.

Example: how a 3 CBM shipment is priced

Say you have 30 cartons, each 50 × 40 × 50 cm and 18 kg, going from Shenzhen to Los Angeles:

  • Volume: 0.5 × 0.4 × 0.5 = 0.1 CBM per carton × 30 = 3 CBM
  • Weight: 18 kg × 30 = 540 kg = 0.54 tonnes
  • Chargeable: 3 CBM is greater than 0.54 tonnes, so freight is charged on 3 CBM
  • Total = origin charges + (3 × LCL rate per CBM) + destination charges + duties

Send us the same details and we will turn this into a real quote for your goods.

LCL, FCL or Air: Which Is Cheaper?

Shipment size Usually the best option Why
Under 1 CBM or under about 200 kg Express or air freight LCL minimum and destination charges make sea freight poor value
About 1–15 CBM LCL Pay only for the space you use
About 15–20 CBM Compare LCL with a 20ft container A full 20ft is often similar in cost, faster and safer
Over about 20 CBM FCL (20ft or 40ft) Lower cost per CBM and no consolidation delays

These are rules of thumb, not fixed limits: they move with freight rates. See air freight vs sea freight and container shipping costs.

LCL Transit Times from China

Destination Port to port Door to door (typical)
USA West Coast 14–20 days 30–40 days
USA East Coast and Midwest 30–40 days 40–50 days
Canada (West) 14–20 days 30–40 days
Vereinigtes Königreich 35–45 days 45–55 days
Deutschland 35–45 days 45–55 days

Two recent LCL shipments for our US customers took 45 days from pickup in Shenzhen to a warehouse in New York, and 42 days to a warehouse in Chicago. See shipping time from China to the USA and China to UK shipping time.

What Happens When LCL Cargo Arrives

LCL cargo cannot be collected straight from the ship. The container first goes to a destination CFS warehouse, where it is unpacked and each shipper’s cargo is released separately. What you need at that stage depends on the country:

Destination What happens What you need
USA The ISF must have been filed before loading in China. After arrival, a customs broker files the entry and pays duties; the CFS releases the cargo once customs and charges are cleared. Importer of record, customs bond, commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading. See customs bonds.
Vereinigtes Königreich A customs declaration is made and import VAT and duty are paid before release. EORI number, commercial invoice, packing list. See EORI number.
Kanada A customs broker declares the goods to the CBSA and pays duties and GST. Business number with import account, invoice, packing list.
Germany and the EU Customs declaration, import VAT and duty, then release. EORI number, invoice, packing list.

If you do not want to handle any of this, a DDP shipment delivers the goods with duties and customs already arranged. Shipping to Amazon? LCL is a common way to send stock to Amazon warehouses; see Amazon FBA shipping from China.

Common LCL Problems and How to Avoid Them

Problem Why it happens How to prevent it
Damaged cartons Goods are handled several times and stacked with other cargo Strong export cartons, palletise where possible, mark fragile goods
Missing or mixed-up cartons Many shippers’ goods in one container Clear shipping marks on every carton, carton counts checked at the warehouse
Delays Missed weekly cut-off, or another shipper’s cargo held by customs Deliver to the warehouse early, accurate documents
Unexpected destination charges CFS, handling and delivery charges not in the quote Ask for a door-to-door or DDP quote
Wrong quantities on documents Several suppliers using different packing list formats Check cartons against packing lists before export

In one of our shipments, some cartons arrived at our warehouse deformed. We replaced the outer cartons, reinforced the packing and checked every carton number again before the goods shipped. See shipping marks for how to label LCL cargo.

LCL with Several Suppliers: Consolidation

If you buy from several factories, you can combine their goods into one LCL shipment instead of paying for several. Each supplier delivers to one warehouse, the goods are checked and combined, and they ship together under one bill of lading. This usually cuts the cost per CBM and means one customs entry at destination. If the combined volume grows past about 15–20 CBM, the same goods can move to a full container. See our freight consolidation service.

Checklist Before You Ship LCL

  1. Get carton sizes, weights and carton counts from each supplier.
  2. Calculate total CBM and weight, and check whether a 20ft container would be cheaper.
  3. Agree the Incoterm with your supplier (FOB, EXW or DDP). See FOB vs EXW.
  4. Ask for a quote that shows origin, ocean and destination charges.
  5. Send shipping marks to every supplier before they pack.
  6. Make sure the commercial invoice and packing list match the cartons. See commercial invoice and packing list.
  7. For the USA, check that the ISF will be filed before loading. See ISF filing.
  8. Confirm the delivery address and whether it needs a liftgate truck or appointment.

FAQ

What does LCL mean in shipping?

Less than container load: your goods share a container with other shippers’ goods, and you pay for the space you use.

What is the minimum for LCL shipping?

Most LCL services have a minimum charge, so very small shipments can cost almost as much as 1 CBM. Send us your carton details and we will compare LCL with air and express.

How is LCL freight calculated?

By W/M: the volume in CBM or the weight in tonnes, whichever is greater, multiplied by the rate, plus origin and destination charges.

What is an LCL container?

A normal 20ft or 40ft container that a consolidator fills with cargo from several shippers.

What are CFS charges for an LCL shipment?

Charges at the container freight station (CFS) for receiving, loading, unloading and handling LCL cargo. They apply at origin and destination and are often charged per CBM.

Is LCL door to door possible?

Yes. A forwarder can collect from your supplier, ship LCL, clear customs and deliver to your address, or ship DDP with duties included.

Why is LCL slower than FCL?

Your goods wait for a weekly consolidation, and the container must be unpacked at destination before your cargo is released. This usually adds one to two weeks.

How do I choose an LCL freight forwarder?

Ask how often they sail to your destination, where their warehouses are, what is included in the quote, and who handles customs at destination. See how to choose a freight forwarder.
