China to UK shipping time is about 40–55 days door to door by sea in a full container, 45–60 days for a shared (LCL) shipment, 30–40 days by rail and truck, 5–10 days by air freight and 3–7 days by express courier. Below we show where those days go, what delays deliveries from China to the UK most often, and how to plan an order so the stock arrives when you need it.
Key points
• The voyage is only part of the delivery time. Pickup, export customs, UK customs and the final truck add one to two weeks.
• There is no direct train to the UK. Rail goes to a terminal in the EU, then by truck and ferry or the Channel Tunnel.
• Shared (LCL) cargo takes about 5 days longer than a full container, because it is consolidated in China and unpacked in the UK.
• A GB EORI number and correct commodity codes keep UK customs from adding days.

Shipping time from China to the UK by sea
Most sea freight to the UK leaves from Shenzhen (Yantian or Shekou), Guangzhou (Nansha), Ningbo or Shanghai and arrives at Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway. The ocean leg takes about 35–45 days port to port. Some services call directly at a UK port; others discharge in Rotterdam or Antwerp and send the container to the UK on a feeder ship, which adds a few days.
The routing the carrier uses also matters. Ships that sail around the Cape of Good Hope instead of through the Suez Canal take about 10–14 days longer. Ask which routing your sailing uses when you book; we confirm it with every quote.
A typical sea shipment adds these steps around the voyage:
- Pickup and export (3–7 days): collection from the factory, delivery to the port or consolidation warehouse, export customs and the vessel cut-off.
- Voyage (35–45 days): including any transshipment in Asia or Europe.
- UK arrival (2–5 days): unloading, UK customs clearance and port release. LCL cargo is also unpacked at a UK warehouse.
- Delivery (1–3 days): by truck to your warehouse, shop or Amazon fulfilment centre.

Shipping time by UK destination
| Destination | Usual port | FCL door to door | LCL door to door |
|---|---|---|---|
| London and the South East | Felixstowe, London Gateway or Southampton | 40–50 days | 45–55 days |
| Birmingham and the Midlands | Felixstowe or Southampton | 40–52 days | 45–57 days |
| Manchester, Leeds and the North | Felixstowe, Southampton or Liverpool | 41–53 days | 46–58 days |
| Scotland | A UK port plus a longer truck leg | 42–55 days | 47–60 days |
Typical ranges from a ready order in South China. Northern Ireland has its own customs arrangements; ask us before you ship there.
Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway?
All three have container services from China. Felixstowe is the UK’s largest container port; Southampton and London Gateway are also served by the big Asia–Europe lines. For most importers the best port is the one with the best sailing that week and the shortest truck to the warehouse, so we compare them for each booking.
Rail: no direct train, but faster than sea
China–Europe trains run to rail terminals in Poland and Germany in about 20–28 days. From there the goods go by truck to the UK, crossing by ferry or the Channel Tunnel. Door to door this takes about 30–40 days, often two to three weeks faster than sea, at a price between sea and air. Rail works for full containers and for a few pallets. Air freight time from China to the UK
Air freight from Shenzhen, Guangzhou or Hong Kong to London Heathrow or Manchester takes about 2–4 days airport to airport, depending on direct flights and connections. Door to door, including pickup, export, UK customs and delivery, allow about 5–10 days. Air freight is priced by chargeable weight, so compact packing saves money. See air freight from China.
Express courier from China to the UK
Express couriers deliver door to door in about 3–7 days and handle customs for you. They are the simplest choice for samples and parcels up to roughly 100 kg. Above that, air freight is usually cheaper. See express shipping from China.
What adds days to your delivery time
- Goods not ready on time. Most delays start at the factory. Confirm the ready date with each supplier before booking.
- Missed cut-offs. Sea and air bookings have a cut-off for cargo and documents. Missing it moves the shipment to the next sailing, often a week later.
- Several suppliers. Collecting from several factories takes longer, but shipping everything together is usually cheaper. See supplier pickup and consolidation.
- Chinese New Year and peak season. Chinese New Year falls on 6 February 2027. Factories and transport slow down for several weeks around it, and space is tight from September to December.
- UK customs. A missing GB EORI number, unclear product descriptions or wrong commodity codes cause holds. Customs checks can add several days.
- Final delivery. Amazon UK and many warehouses need a booked delivery slot, which can add a few days, more before Christmas.
Example: from a factory in Dongguan to Birmingham
An illustrative timeline for a shared (LCL) shipment of 12 cartons. Actual dates depend on the sailing and are confirmed with the quote.
| Day | Step |
|---|---|
| 0 | Goods ready at the factory, booking confirmed |
| 1–3 | Pickup and delivery to the consolidation warehouse in Shenzhen |
| 4–8 | Export customs, loading and vessel cut-off |
| 9–47 | Voyage from Shenzhen to Felixstowe |
| 48–51 | Unloading, UK customs clearance, unpacking at the UK warehouse |
| 52–53 | Truck delivery to Birmingham |
Total: about 53 days, inside the usual 45–60-day range for LCL.
Planning for Christmas and Black Friday
Most UK retailers want stock in their warehouse by early to mid November. Working backwards by sea:
| Step | Latest date (sea, FCL) |
|---|---|
| Stock needed in a UK warehouse | Early November |
| Container sails from South China (about 6–7 weeks earlier) | Mid to late September |
| Goods ready and booking confirmed | Early September |
| Production starts (check with your supplier) | July to August |
Golden Week in early October slows factories and trucks in China, so aim to ship before it. If you are late, rail can save two to three weeks, and air freight can cover the first weeks of sales.
How to get goods from China to the UK faster
- Book early. Send carton sizes, weights and the ready date as soon as the order is placed, so we can hold space on the next sailing or flight.
- Get your GB EORI number first. It is free and usually issued within a few days, but customs cannot clear the goods without it.
- Send clear documents. A commercial invoice with exact product descriptions and values, and a packing list that matches the cartons.
- Split urgent stock. Send a small first batch by air or express to start selling, and the rest by sea or rail.
- Consider DDP. With DDP shipping, customs clearance and duties are arranged before arrival, so the goods are delivered without extra steps on your side.
