Six of the world’s ten busiest container ports are in mainland China. Which one your goods leave from affects the trucking cost from your supplier, the sailing options to your country and sometimes the transit time. This guide lists the major ports in China, where they are, which factories they serve and how to choose the right port of loading for your shipment.

Key points
• China’s biggest container ports are Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Guangzhou and Tianjin.
• They sit in three main export regions: the Yangtze River Delta (Shanghai, Ningbo), the Pearl River Delta (Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hong Kong) and northern China (Qingdao, Tianjin).
• The best port of loading is usually the one closest to your supplier with good sailings to your destination.
• Shenzhen has several terminals: Yantian in the east, Shekou and Chiwan in the west. “FOB Shenzhen” can mean any of them.
• All major ports have direct sailings to the USA, Canada, the UK and Europe.

China’s Top 10 Container Ports

Rank Port 2025 throughput (TEU) Region Main supplier areas
1 Shanghai About 55 million Yangtze River Delta Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, inland China via the Yangtze
2 Ningbo-Zhoushan About 44 million Yangtze River Delta Zhejiang, including Ningbo, Yiwu, Hangzhou and Wenzhou
3 Shenzhen About 35 million Pearl River Delta Shenzhen, Dongguan, Huizhou and eastern Guangdong
4 Qingdao About 33 million Northern China Shandong and parts of northern China
5 Guangzhou About 28 million Pearl River Delta Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhongshan and western Guangdong
6 Tianjin About 24 million Northern China Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and northern China
7 Xiamen About 12.5 million Southeast coast Fujian
8 Beibu Gulf About 10 million Southwest coast Guangxi and southwest China
9 Rizhao About 7.4 million Northern China Southern Shandong
10 Lianyungang About 7.2 million Eastern China Northern Jiangsu and inland rail links

TEU means twenty-foot equivalent unit: one 20ft container counts as 1 TEU, a 40ft container as 2. Hong Kong, a separate customs territory, handled about 13 million TEU in 2025 and is listed separately below. Figures are rounded from 2025 port statistics.

South China Ports (Pearl River Delta)

The Pearl River Delta in Guangdong is China’s biggest manufacturing region for electronics, furniture, lighting, toys, clothing, home goods and small appliances. Three port areas serve it:

  • Shenzhen: not one port but several terminals. Yantian in the east is a deep-water port for the largest ships and has many direct sailings to North America and Europe. Shekou and Chiwan in the west handle many routes too, including services to Southeast Asia and the Americas.
  • Guangzhou: the main container terminals are at Nansha, at the mouth of the Pearl River. Nansha suits suppliers in Guangzhou, Foshan and Zhongshan. Older river terminals at Huangpu handle smaller and domestic services.
  • Hong Kong: a free port with many international sailings. Cargo from mainland factories crosses the border by truck or barge before loading, so it is used mainly for specific routes and transshipment.

For factories in Dongguan, both Shenzhen and Guangzhou ports are close. The choice usually depends on the sailing schedule and rates for your destination that week. For a closer look at the biggest South China terminal, see our guide to the Port of Yantian.

Shenzhen or Hong Kong?

Many buyers still think of Hong Kong as the port for South China. Today most factory cargo ships directly from Shenzhen or Guangzhou, because export customs is done in mainland China and there is no border crossing to arrange. Hong Kong is still useful for some routes, for transshipment and for goods already stored there, but for a container loaded in Guangdong, Shenzhen or Nansha is usually simpler and cheaper.

East China Ports (Yangtze River Delta)

  • Shanghai: the world’s busiest container port for more than 15 years. Most international containers use Yangshan, a deep-water port on islands south of the city, linked by a long bridge. Shanghai serves Jiangsu, Anhui and factories along the Yangtze River.
  • Ningbo-Zhoushan: one of the world’s busiest ports by total cargo. Its main container terminals are at Beilun. Ningbo is the natural port for Zhejiang suppliers, including the small-commodity market in Yiwu.

North China and Other Ports

  • Qingdao: the main port of Shandong province, with strong links to Korea and Japan as well as long-haul routes.
  • Tianjin (Xingang): the port for Beijing and northern China. Xingang means “new port”, and it is often written as Tianjin Xingang on quotes.
  • Xiamen: serves Fujian, a major region for shoes, sportswear, stone and ceramics.
  • Beibu Gulf: ports in Guangxi, including Qinzhou, Beihai and Fangchenggang, with links to Southeast Asia and to southwest China by rail.
  • Dalian, Rizhao and Lianyungang: regional ports for northeast China, southern Shandong and northern Jiangsu. Lianyungang also connects to rail routes towards Central Asia.

Which Port for Which Products?

China’s export industries are grouped in clusters, and each cluster has a natural port. This table shows typical examples:

Industry cluster Main cities Usual port
Electronics, phone accessories, smart devices Shenzhen, Dongguan, Huizhou Shenzhen (Yantian, Shekou)
Furniture, lighting, home appliances, building materials Foshan, Zhongshan, Dongguan, Jiangmen Guangzhou (Nansha) or Shenzhen
Clothing, bags, cosmetics, wholesale goods Guangzhou Nansha or Shenzhen
Small commodities, gifts, festival goods Yiwu, Jinhua Ningbo
Textiles, hardware, tools, auto parts Zhejiang (Shaoxing, Ningbo, Taizhou, Yongkang) Ningbo or Shanghai
Electronics, machinery, solar products Jiangsu (Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou) Shanghai
Shoes, sportswear, stone, ceramics Fujian (Jinjiang, Quanzhou, Xiamen) Xiamen
Tyres, machinery, food, chemicals Shandong Qingdao
Steel, machinery, products from North China Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin Tianjin Xingang

Goods from inland provinces reach the coast by truck, by rail or by barge on the Yangtze River. Factories in Sichuan or Chongqing, for example, often ship through Shanghai by river, or through Beibu Gulf ports by rail and sea.

Does the Port Change the Transit Time?

A little, but less than most buyers expect. Ships on the main routes call at several Chinese ports in a row. A typical Asia–Europe service loads in North or East China first, then in South China, before heading west. A typical transpacific service loads in South China or East China and then crosses the Pacific.

  • To the US West Coast: East and North China ports are a day or two closer than South China, but the difference often disappears in the schedule.
  • To Europe: South China is the last loading stop on many services, so cargo from Shenzhen often has the shortest time at sea.
  • Bigger effect: how often your route sails from that port, and whether it goes direct or changes ships in a hub such as Singapore or Busan.

For typical times by country, see sea freight from China and shipping routes from China.

How to Choose the Port of Loading

  1. Distance from your supplier. Trucking inside China costs money and time. A supplier in Zhejiang usually ships from Ningbo, one in Guangdong from Shenzhen or Guangzhou.
  2. Sailings to your destination. The big ports all have direct services to the USA, Canada, the UK and Europe, but the number of weekly sailings and transit times differ.
  3. Freight rates. Rates can differ between ports for the same destination, especially in peak season. Your forwarder can compare.
  4. Several suppliers in different provinces. You can ship each order from its nearest port, or bring everything to one warehouse and ship together. See freight consolidation.
  5. LCL or FCL. Shared-container (LCL) services are most frequent from the biggest ports. See LCL vs FCL.

Example: two suppliers, two provinces

A buyer orders 12 CBM of tools from a supplier in Ningbo and 9 CBM of lighting from a supplier in Zhongshan, both for the same warehouse in Germany. There are two sensible options:

Ship from two ports Bring everything to one port
How LCL from Ningbo and LCL from Nansha or Shenzhen Truck the Ningbo goods south, or the Zhongshan goods north, and load one 20ft container
Main costs Two LCL shipments, two sets of destination charges Long-distance trucking in China, one container, one set of destination charges
Timing Each order ships when ready Waits for the later supplier, plus 2–3 days of trucking
Best when Ready dates are far apart, or volumes are small Ready dates are close and the total fills a container

There is no single right answer. We price both options and show you the difference before you decide.

Port Names on Your Quote

Suppliers often quote FOB with a port name. Know what it means:

On the quote Usually means
FOB Shenzhen Yantian, Shekou or Chiwan, depending on the sailing
FOB Guangzhou Nansha, sometimes Huangpu
FOB Shanghai Yangshan or Waigaoqiao
FOB Ningbo Beilun and the other Ningbo-Zhoushan terminals
FOB Tianjin Tianjin Xingang
FOB China Incomplete. Ask which port.

For containers handed over at a terminal or warehouse before loading, FCA is often a better term than FOB.

Checklist: Before You Agree the Port with Your Supplier

  1. Ask where the goods are made, not only where the supplier’s office is.
  2. Ask which port the supplier usually ships from, and whether the quote is FOB, FCA or EXW.
  3. Make sure the quote names an exact port, such as FOB Ningbo or FOB Shenzhen.
  4. Ask your forwarder to compare that port with the next nearest one for your destination.
  5. Check the ready date against the main Chinese holidays. See China public holidays 2027.
  6. If you buy from several regions, decide early whether to consolidate or ship separately.

FAQ

What is the biggest port in China?

Shanghai. It handled about 55 million TEU in 2025 and has been the world’s busiest container port for more than 15 years.

How many major ports does China have?

China has dozens of coastal ports. About ten of them handle most international container traffic, led by Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Guangzhou and Tianjin.

Which Chinese port is best for shipping to the USA?

Usually the one nearest your supplier. Shenzhen (Yantian), Shanghai, Ningbo and Qingdao all have frequent direct sailings to the US West and East Coasts.

What is the main port in South China?

Shenzhen, with its Yantian, Shekou and Chiwan terminals, followed by Guangzhou’s Nansha terminals. Hong Kong is also nearby.

Which port is closest to Yiwu?

Ningbo is the usual port for goods bought in Yiwu. Yiwu also has an inland dry port, where containers can be loaded and sent to Ningbo by rail or truck. Shanghai is another option.

Is Hong Kong a Chinese port for shipping?

Hong Kong is part of China but a separate customs territory. Goods made in mainland China and shipped through Hong Kong must first be cleared for export on the mainland. Most factory cargo from Guangdong now ships directly from Shenzhen or Guangzhou.

Is Ningbo or Shanghai better for shipping?

Both are very large with direct sailings worldwide. Ningbo is usually closer for suppliers in Zhejiang, Shanghai for Jiangsu and the Yangtze region. Compare the trucking cost and the sailing schedule.
